It gives me great pleasure to introduce the new Webpage of Silchar Medical College & Hospital in the new year. Since 1968, our Institution has been serving the ailing public of the entire Barak Valley and the adjoining regions of the neighbouring states of Tripura, Manipur, Mizoram and Meghalaya.
A long felt need of the people of Jorhat was fulfilled with the laying of the Foundation Stone of the Jorhat Medical College by Hon'ble Prime Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh, in presence of Hon'ble Chief Minister of Assam Sjt Tarun Gogoi, Hon’ble Union Minister of Law & Justice Shri Veerappa Moily, Hon’ble Union Minister of Mines and DoNER Shri B.K. Handique, Hon’ble Health Minister of Assam Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, Hon’ble MLA Shri Rana Goswami and a galaxy of distinguished guests and a huge crowd, on the historic day of 25th August 2008.
The journey of Medical Education in Assam started with the establishment of Berry White Medical School at Dibrugarh about 100 years back. The first Medical College in Assam-the Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh was established on 3rd November 1947 by upgradation of the Berry White Medical School. Subsequently, on 20th September, 1960 the Gauhati Medical College, Guwahati and on 15th August, 1968 the Silchar Medical College, Silchar were established.
Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh is one of the premier and oldest medical institutes of the NE region of India. British Philanthropist Sir John Berry White, a retired brigadier of British army and later the civil surgeon of the erstwhile Lakhimpur district in 1870, contributed his lifetime earning of Rupees Fifty Thousand (present day valuation is more than 50 million of rupees to establish his brain child “Berry White Medical School” in 1900 AD. This school heralded the beginning of Allopathic Medical Education by conferring LMP Diploma in old undivided Assam.
Dr. Bhubaneswar Borooah Cancer Institute (BBCI) was set up by a voluntary organization called 'Dr. B. Borooah Cancer Society Trust'. Dr. Bhubaneswar Borooah (4th September 1893 - 25th September 1956) was a great physician, freedom fighter and philanthropist of Assam. In 1958 at a public meeting in Guwahati, a decision was taken to set up a cancer hospital at Guwahati to commemorate the memory of Dr. Bhubaneswar Borooah. Late Debendra Nath Sarma was the Founder President and Late Dr. Kanak Chandra Borooah, illustrious brother of Dr. Bhubaneswar Borooah was the Founder Secretary.
Dr. John Berry White, MRCS, a British Surgeon of the East India Company, was the pioneer to start Health Education and health care in Assam. He established a medical school known as 'Berry White Medical School' at Dibrugarh, Assam in 1898-99. In course of time this medical school was upgraded and on 3rd Nov., 1947 the Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh was established and it stands as the first medical college in Assam.
The Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi Regional Institute of Mental Health (LGBRIMH) was initially set up as Tezpur Lunatic Asylum under the British Government in April, 1876.
The institution and its teaching hospital are located in a sprawling green campus located right on the Chennai-Kolkata National Highway (NH 16). It is 23 km from the Vijayawada city the biggest Railway Junction in South India and just 5km away from Vijayawada Airport and everyday air flights are available from Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai and New Delhi cities. The campus is well connected by road by Chennai, Kolkata highway number. The Institute and Hospital was established in Rural Area in Krishna District covering the population around 30 lakhs.
GIMSR Hospital that was started in 2014 spread its wings into a medical college with the first batch of its UG students joining in the year 2015. Currently, the institution has 600 undergraduate students and geared up to start its PG programs in the next academic year.
Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences is the first medical college of Arunachal Pradesh situated at Naharlagun town of Papum Pare district. The institute is established in 2017 and the academic session started on 1 August 2018 for academic year 2018–19. The Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences college and hospital have 50 MBBS seats and a 300 bedded hospital.
The institute is named after Tomo Riba, 2nd chief minister of Arunachal Pradesh.

A 720 bedded hospital serving the expanding northern regions of Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation and the neighborhood towards the north. Traditionally the Visakhapatnam serves the patients of the north coastal Andhra and The interior Orissa state and the GVP Hospital is geared for this demand as well.
Dr S P Rao, Professor in Preventive & Social Medicine is in possession of post graduate degrees in Community Medicine and Hospital Administration.. He is qualified in Epidemiology, Computer technology and Infectious diseases. Due to his penchant for field epidemiology work, he travelled Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Delhi. He has been consulting epidemiologist for WHO centre for Social Science and DANIDA projects in MP.
NRI Academy of Sciences is promoted by a small consortium of 32 NRI doctors from USA who were all born and brought up in Guntur and Krishna Districts of Andhra Pradesh. The area of operations of the society shall be initially confined to the Revenue limits of Kadapa district, and shall be extended to other places in Andhra Pradesh, as well as in other states in India in pursuance of its objectives.
