Armed Forces Medical College, Pune is a premier medical institution in India. AFMC has the distinction of being the first medical college set up by the Armed Forces of any country in Asia. The college is a unique institution which combines medical education with training specific to the health care needs of the Armed Forces. AFMC has been consistently rated among the top three medical colleges in India by surveys published by reputed newsmagazines for the past decade.

Guru Gobind Singh Medical College with more than 630 bedded Hospital is a Punjab Government institution established in 1973. The Govt. of Punjab, vide its Notification No.8/02/2005-1HB-III/6308 dated 31.10.2006 transferred this college to Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot as its constituent Medical College. The College is recognized by Medical Council of India vide its Letter No.MCI34941(UG)2010-PUN/35407 dated 22.10.2010 for 50 MBBS admissions per year.

History 

One hospital and one dispensary were started in 1845. Subsequently, such facilities were recommended for other parts of the state as well. However, due to lack of trained doctors the initiative with limited success, In 1855, a maternity hospital and one dispensary and a medical school were opened in Jaipur, inaugurated on 7th September, 1861 and in the first batch 24 students were admitted. Being a developing nation, health and hygiene are mainstays in terms of national priority. With so many people living below the poverty line, statistics reveal that unhealthy living conditions will lead to disease and epidemics, unless a proactive approach by the medical community is put into action. Keeping these in mind, Dr. M.G.R. University’s Faculty of Medical Sciences was established.

On 25th January 1926, a Trust under the name of ‘P.S.GOVINDASWAMY NAIDU & SONS’; came into being to cater to the growing needs of education and industry. Coimbatore opened a new chapter in its history.

To understand the genesis, growth and objectives of the trust, it is necessary to travel back in time and visualize the social, educational and economic scenario of India in general and city of Coimbatore in particular.

Shri Guru Ram Rai Darbar Sahib in Dehradun is a philanthropic organization of the Udaseen sect . Sri Guru Ram Rai ji, the eldest son of the seventh Guru of the Sikhs- Sri Har Rai ji, had established it for protecting and spreading the traditions, ideals and philosophies of Hinduism Dehradun owes its name and history to the emergence of Sri Guru Ram Rai ji who came to this then small , green Arcadian abode way back in 1676. He established his ‘ DERA ‘ in Doon Valley which later became popular as ‘DEHRADUN’ During the reigns of Aurangzeb , the doon valley was Guru Maharajji’s property.

Beginning it's journey in the year of 1969 as ‘Burdwan University Medical College’ by the University of Burdwan, it was taken over by the Government of West Bengal on 4 August 1976, and renamed as Burdwan Medical College. In the year 2003 the College remained as the sole Medical College under the academic jurisdiction of Burdwan University until it was taken up by the West Bengal University of Health Sciences in 2003.
