Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences (SMIMS) is a constituent college of Sikkim Manipal University (SMU) established in the year 1997 as Central Referral Hospital. The first batch of MBBS students were enrolled in the year 2001. With a team of 288 faculty, SMIMS conducts the following Medical and Health Sciences courses: (i) MBBS (ii) M.Sc.(Medical) in Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology and integrated Medical Bio Technology(iii) DNB in Paediatrics, OBG, Medicine and Surgery (iv) MS in ENT & OBG, (v)MD in Medicine, Pediatrics, Community Medicine, Pharmacology, Biochemistry, Psychiatry, Microbiology & Physiology.
Exhibiting a unique combination of Sikkimese style and modern architecture, SMIMS is spread in a sprawling area of 25 acres of mountainous land. The Institute provides a very congenial environment for academic activities with lecture theatres well equipped with all modern audio visual amenities. SMIMS library has a seating capacity of more than 150 students at a time with all the modern facilities of computers, internet, interactive CDs to support the teaching, learning, and research activities of the students. The institution has a 750 seated auditorium with all modern facilities. A 42 seated conference hall and a 45 seated seminar hall are also available to hold state and national level events.
SMIMS provides hostel facilities for around 600 students with 24 hours uninterrupted power and water supply, attached bathrooms and a 300 seated dining hall .The hostel also has a Gymnasium, Badminton Court, TV Rooms and internet facilities for the students. The campus also has volley ball and basket ball courts.
The associated Central Referral Hospital is a 500 bedded tertiary care hospital .The hospital has 21 specialities and superspecialities in Neurosurgery, Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Cardio-surgery and Urology with state of the art equipments. The hospital houses modern amenities of treatment like CT Scan, Ultra Sound, Dialysis Unit, Central Laboratory for various investigations, 24 hrs pharmacy and completely automated and online Hospital Information System .Emergency cases are handled at CRH through a well-equipped Casualty department manned by expert clinicians and paramedical staff .The hospital also gives importance to academic activities by conducting CMEs and Conferences. The hospital also has facilities for ambulance services, canteen & cafeterias, general stores, comfortable waiting areas, bank and post office. SMIMS aims at providing excellence in medical education together with community healthcare services.

Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (Latin: Medicinae Baccalaureus, Baccalaureus Chirurgiae; abbreviated in many ways, most commonly MBBS, but also MB ChB, BMBS, MB BCh, MB BChir), is the primary medical degree awarded by medical schools in countries that follow the tradition of the United Kingdom. The historical degree nomenclature states that they are two separate undergraduate degrees. In practice, however, they are usually combined as one and conferred together, and may also be awarded at graduate-level medical schools.
Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), is a professional degree in medical science. A person holding the MBBS degree becomes a certified medical practitioner. The duration of MBBS course is five years and six months including one year of rotational internship at hospitals, health centres, and health camps organised by non-profit organisations (NGOs). MBBS course syllabus includes studies on anatomy, pharmacology, pathology as well as community health & medicine, paediatrics, and surgery. The syllabus, prescribed in such a way that MBBS degree holders can choose a specialisation for further majoring and practising medicine. The career specialisations for MBBS students are Nephrology, Cardiology, Gynecology, Anesthesiology, Organ Transplant, Endocrine, and General Surgery, etc.
MD - Psychiatry
M. D. in Psychiatry is a Clinical Speciality course.
Doctor of Medicine in Psychiatry explores the major psychiatric syndromes like psychotic, mood and anxiety disorders, psychological effects of physical diseases, the doctor-patient relationship, human development, patient interviewing, and ethical issues in medicine. It is a three-year postgraduation course and can be pursued by any MBBS holders from a University recognized by Medical council of India. Most psychiatrists practice general psychiatry. Sub-specialization in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Addiction Medicine, and Geriatric psychiatry can be conducted after M. D. in Psychiatry.
