Way back in 1707, the first hospital in Calcutta was built in the premises of the Old Fort at Gerstein Place. The Council of Fort William constructed this hospital. This hospital, initially built for the Europeans, was then known as Presidency Hospital. The hospital was accommodated in a single storied building. Later, in 1768, two houses were purchased in Lower Circular Road for converting them into a full fledged hospital. Located near the Presidency Jail, the hospital came to be known as Presidency General Hospital. Doors were opened to the non-European patients from 2nd April 1770.
This centre, a branch of the Ramakrishna Order, follows the ideal and principles of Sri Ramakrishna - "Service to Jiva is Service to Shiva" (One who serves man serves God indeed). Since its humble beginning in 1932 as a maternity hospital, this centre has grown into a 626 beded with multi-discipline, is situated in Kolkata, capital of West Bengal. Founded over three decades ago, NBMCH is a medical school. Dr. B.C. Roy is the founder and director of our medical university. He has worked hard over the years to ensure that his vision becomes the success that it is today.
We began with a few students and a faculty of 5. Our first classes were done in our pioneer hall, long before the iconic quadrangle in the school was constructed.
During 1803, at height of its rule in India, the British India Company (East India Company) had a private army of 260000, twice the size of British Army. Plenty of soldiers used to die, mainly from diarrheal diseases, malaria and kala azar. The only available treatment at that time was traditional Indian medicine. It was not possible to treat this vast number of soldiers with very limited European doctors. Necessity of imparting training to the native people in modern medicine was badly felt.
School of Tropical Medicine (STM), is one of the seven such Institutions dedicated to research, care and cure of tropical diseases. STM was founded by Sir Leonard Rogers way back in 1914. The corridors of STM had regular footfall of eminent researchers like Leonard Rogers, Ronald Ross, R Knowels, UN Brahmachari, JB Chatterjee, RN Chopra and many others. The foundation stone of the School of Tropical Medicine was laid by the Governor. Lord Carmichael in the year 1914 on 24th February at the initiative of Sir Leonard Rogers.
