Welcome Message – Welcome to our Thoothukudi Government Medical College which is situated in the south East coastal city of Tamil Nadu – The PEARL CITY – MUTHU NAGAR – PORT CITY – Thoothukudi. Thoothukudi Medical College was started and functioning from 16.08.2000. In this college, Non-Clinical and Clinical departments are functioning. Sanction has been given for admission of 100 students for M.B.B.S. course every Academic year from the year 2000-2001.
All the services are provided free of cost to people below poverty. Now 1112 beds are available in our Thoothukudi Medical College Hospital. An average of 2800 Out-patients and 590 In-patients are treated here daily. Moreover, an average of 465 deliveries, 630 major surgeries, 460 minor surgeries and 160 family welfare sterilizations are carried out here per month.
A special ward has now been set up for the patients affected by Dengue fever and qualified Medical Officers have also been entrusted with the treatment of dengue fever. A special ward with air-conditioning facility has been located in the new building for various treatments under Chief Minister Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS).
In this Medical College Hospital, Integrated Counselling and Testing Centre (ICTC), Revised National Tuberculosis Control Project (RNTCP), National Leprosy Eradication Project, Anti Retiro Viral Therapy (ART) for HIV testing, etc. are functioning.
Transport facilities such as Ambulance and Mortuary Van are also readily available here.
Institution History
The Govt. Thoothukudi Medical College was started and functioning from 16.08.2000. Initially it was located inside the campus of Fisheries Department, Beach Road, and later it was shifted to the present Medical College block in 3rd Mile, Thoothukudi during the year 2001.
The first batch of MBBS students were admitted during the academic year 2000-2001. In this college, Non-Clinical and Clinical departments are functioning. Sanction has been given for admission of 100 students for M.B.B.S. course every Academic year from the year 2000-2001. The seats have been increased to 150 seats from the year 2013-2014. During this academic year, 176 trainees are undergoing Compulsory Rotatory Residential Internship programme.
55 students are admitted and trained in the course of Diploma in Nursing from the Academic Year 2003-2004 and the intake has been increased to 100 from the year 2015-16. DMLT Courses of two years duration and One Year Paramedical Certificate Course (Emergency Care Technician, Respiratory Therapy, Anaesthesia Technician, Theatre Technician and Orthopaedic Technician) were started from 2005-2006 with the total intake of 100 students and 150 students respectively. CRA (Certified Radiological Assistant) Course was started from the academic year 2007-2008. Moreover in Nursing Assistant Course for both gents and ladies, 50 students are trained every year from the academic year 2009-2010.
The following Degree courses of Allied Health Sciences such as B.Sc.,-Medical Laboratory Technology, B.Sc.,-Operation Theatre and Anaesthesia Technology, B.Sc.,-Respiratory Therapy have commenced in our institution from academic year 2018-2019 with an annual intake of 20 seats each.
In Thoothukudi Government Medical College Hospital, departments such as General Surgery, General Medicine, Ophthalmology, ENT, Paediatrics, Anaesthesia, Venereology & Dermatology, Thoracic Medicine, Psychiatry, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, Radiology, Radiotherapy, Phsyical Medicine, Dentistry, Neurology, Gaestro Enterology, Cardiology, Nerosurgery, Plastic Surgery, Medical Oncology, Surgical Oncology and Anti Retro Viral Treatment Centre are functioning.
From the year 2018-2019, our institution has commenced 4-Post Graduate courses viz. MD General Medicine (10-seats), MS General Surgery (10-seats), MD Paediatrics (6-seats) and M.S. Obstetrics and Gynaecology (6-seats). From the year 2019-20, we have commenced MD Anesthesiology course with 8-seats and, MS ENT (2-seats), MS Orthopedics (3-Seats) from the year 2020-21. We are also in the process of getting necessary permission from Medical Council of India to commence MD-Forensic Medicine in our college from the year 2021-2022. Besides the PG courses, we have successfully commenced Super Specialty Courses in our Institution from the 2019-20 with 2-seats for DM Neurology and 1-seat for DM Gastroenterology. Efforts are then taken to commence few more PG courses & Super Specialty courses in our college.

Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (Latin: Medicinae Baccalaureus, Baccalaureus Chirurgiae; abbreviated in many ways, most commonly MBBS, but also MB ChB, BMBS, MB BCh, MB BChir), is the primary medical degree awarded by medical schools in countries that follow the tradition of the United Kingdom. The historical degree nomenclature states that they are two separate undergraduate degrees. In practice, however, they are usually combined as one and conferred together, and may also be awarded at graduate-level medical schools.
Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), is a professional degree in medical science. A person holding the MBBS degree becomes a certified medical practitioner. The duration of MBBS course is five years and six months including one year of rotational internship at hospitals, health centres, and health camps organised by non-profit organisations (NGOs). MBBS course syllabus includes studies on anatomy, pharmacology, pathology as well as community health & medicine, paediatrics, and surgery. The syllabus, prescribed in such a way that MBBS degree holders can choose a specialisation for further majoring and practising medicine. The career specialisations for MBBS students are Nephrology, Cardiology, Gynecology, Anesthesiology, Organ Transplant, Endocrine, and General Surgery, etc.
MD - Anaesthesiology
The purpose of PG education is to create specialists who would provide high quality health care and advance the cause of science through research & training. A post graduate specialist having undergone the required training in anesthesiology should be able to recognize the health needs of the community. He or she should be competent to handle effectively medical problems and should be aware of the recent advances pertaining to his/her specialty. She/he should be highly competent anesthesiologist with broad range of skills that will enable him/her to practice anesthesiology independently. The PG student should also acquire the basic skills in teaching of medical/para-medical students. She/he is also expected to know the principles of research methodology and modes of consulting library. She/he should attend conferences, workshops and CMEs regularly to upgrade his/her knowledge. The purpose of this document is to provide teachers and learners illustrative guidelines to achieve defined outcomes through learning and assessment. This document was prepared by various subject-content specialists. The Reconciliation Board of the Academic Committee has attempted to render uniformity without compromise to purpose and content of the document. Compromise in purity of syntax has been made in order to preserve the purpose and content. This has necessitated retention of “domains of learning” under the heading “competencies”
