During 1803, at height of its rule in India, the British India Company (East India Company) had a private army of 260000, twice the size of British Army. Plenty of soldiers used to die, mainly from diarrheal diseases, malaria and kala azar. The only available treatment at that time was traditional Indian medicine. It was not possible to treat this vast number of soldiers with very limited European doctors. Necessity of imparting training to the native people in modern medicine was badly felt.

As Government Medical College, Miraj, , previously known as Miraj Medical College successfully completes 52 years, it may be difficult for visualize the early days when this medical college was almost literally started on a shoestring ! 

         Since the times as a provincial state in the pre-independent era, Miraj boasted of good quality medical care. Dr.GopalraoGovindraoWatwe was the first Indian doctor in Miraj . With his help, In 1864 his Highness ShrimantPatwardhan started first Government Hospital in Miraj

Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) a constituent of KIIT, offers a unique combination of experience and expertise. Murshidabad Medical College is a government-run medical college located very near to Berhampore Court Railway Station on Station Road in Berhampore Town at Murshidabad district. The college was established in 2012. The Hospital serves the people of the districts Murshidabad, Birbhum and the northern part of Nadia by providing preventive, diagnostic and curative services to the community. The college has a capacity of 125 MBBS seats which is affiliated to West Bengal University of Health Sciences and recognized by Medical Council of India. Students are admitted through NEET.
