More than half a century ago, the philanthropist in and around Kolenchery, under the auspices of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, envisage a noble initiative to care for the sick and the destitute which gave shape to the founding of Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church Medical Mission (MOSC Medical  Mission). In addition to MOSC Medical College Hospital, the Medical Mission runs top rated educational institutions namely MOSC Medical College, MOSC College of Nursing and MOSC Institute of Allied Health Sciences.

Government Medical College Ernakulam, (GMCE), Ernakulam is one among the premier medical institutions in the Kerala state. The college was governed by the Co-operative Academy of Professional Education established by the Government of Kerala. Later in December 17, 2013 the Government has taken over the institution and now it is governed and managed by Government of Kerala. The admissions and functioning of the college is according to the rules and regulations formulated by the Government of Kerala.
